Recently I’ve been meditating on the book of James – 1 verse per day.
“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do.”
– James 1:5-8
What’s the significance of ‘believing when asking’? And why is doubting so serious?
Firstly, let’s take a look at what it means to ‘believe’.
“Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.”
– Hebrews 11:1
In other words, it’s being confident in God and his promises. In the case of James, it’s that if you ask God for wisdom, he will give it to you.
How come doubting this one promise suddenly escalates into being a ‘wave of the sea’, ‘double-minded and unstable in all they do’? 🌊
This random website suggests that: “A double-minded person is restless and confused in his thoughts, his actions, and his behaviour. Such a person is always in conflict with himself… One part of his mind is sure of something, while the other part doubts.”
And that made me realise that there are so many things I feel ‘double-minded’ and restless about. 😖 Whether it’s work, relationships, study, the future, there’s a lot of times where I feel insecure, anxious, afraid, confused… I ‘sort of’ trust God but if I’m honest with myself, I don’t feel that deep sense of security that comes from trusting him fully.
Then I realised that the root of all doubt and uncertainty is a lack of confidence in God himself.
“Blessed are those whose strength is in you…
Lord Almighty, blessed is the one who trusts in you.”
– Psalm 84:5, 12
So I’ve been thinking about how important faith is to God. I think it is a very powerful thing to declare inside your heart that your strength is in God, and that you trust him.
I believe that when we genuinely mean that – there is nothing we can’t handle because God is with us and blessing us through it.
“But if you can do anything, take pity on us and help us.”
“‘If you can’?” said Jesus. “Everything is possible for one who believes.”
Immediately the boy’s father exclaimed, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!”
– Mark 9:22-24
Don’t be discouraged, our God is gracious and will help us with our unbelief.
P.s sorry this blog is all over the place 😅 I kind of have all these jumbled thoughts that I internally process and then feel like it would be good to externalise to encourage others but I don’t have a plan or structure in my expression and it just sort of randomly comes out. I pray that God will still use it though to bless you!
